Also known as "patience" in British English, Solitaire is a single player card game believed to have been originated in France. Napoleon was also said to have played Solitaire during his exile. In recent years, Solitaire has become the most popular game largely due to its inclusion in Windows 95.

The Sudoku puzzle, designed by Howard Garn, an architect from Indiana, was first published in 1979 by Dell Magazine as "Number Place". It became popular in Japan in 1986 after it was published by Nikoli and given the name Sudoku - meaning "single number". It became an international hit in 2005.

By the 19th century, the first crosswords appreared in puzzle books in England mostly for the amusement of children. In December 1913, the New York World published in its Sunday edition the first crossword puzzle created by Arthur Wayne, a journalist from Liverpool. Today, crosswords are standard features in magazines and newspapers all over the world.

The first jigsaw puzzle, a map mounted on a sheet of plywood, was produced in 1760 by John Spilsbury, a London mapmaker. The cardboard puzzles were introduced in the late 1800, and became popular during the 1930's Depression due to their great entertainment value for a small price. |
